DOUG NICHOL's analog portrait of the last typewriter repair shop in Berkley, CA and eulogy for one of the great products of the 20th Century. California Typewriter premiered at the Telluride Film Festival where it was hailed by Owen Gleiberman in Variety as an “ingenious meditation on what the digital era is doing to us." Produced by JOHN BENET and featuring Tom Hanks, John Mayer and Sam Shepard, the film was nominated for three Critics' Choice Awards, including Best Documentary.

Director

Doug Nichol was born in Southern California and graduated from USC film school. He started out his career as a cinematographer working on such music documentaries as Truth or Dare (Madonna) and Rattle and Hum (U2), then as the director of hundreds of commercials and music videos, including "This is Hardcore" for Pulp which was named one of the 30 best music videos of all time by TIME. He has been nominated for three Grammy awards, and won one for directing Sting's "Ten Summoner's Tales." His documentary debut, California Typewriter, featuring Tom Hanks, John Mayer and Sam Shepard, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and was released theatrically to critical acclaim. He lives in San Francisco and Paris.

John Benet is a documentary and commercial producer with three decades of experience. He has produced hundreds of advertisements working with prominent production companies and notable directors, including "What Is the Value of Zero?" directed by Malcolm Venville for Anonymous Content. His decade-long partnership with filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu resulted in groundbreaking campaigns for brands like Procter & Gamble, Facebook and Apple and the non-profit Montana Meth. More recently, John produced the first collaboration between Mother Los Angeles and Sonic Drive-In, a national campaign driven by 38 unique documentary vignettes. He is also the producer of the documentary California Typewriter, featuring Tom Hanks, John Mayer and Sam Shepard, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and was released theatrically to critical acclaim. His projects have won numerous awards, including an Emmy, a DGA award and many Cannes Lions.
